Manage Player ContractNFL Contracts: Franchise Tags
Each year, NFL teams have the option to apply a franchise or transition tag on one player who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year.
The window to make this tag offer begins 22 days before the start of the league year, and lasts for a full two weeks (14 days). Teams have the ability to rescind this offer as long as the tag remains unsigned. Once an offer is accepted and a tag is officially signed, that tender becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap, & injury for the upcoming season.
Tagged players can still be traded, however they must sign their tender prior to the trade becoming official.
Players who are offered a tag still have the ability to negotiate a multi-year contract extension until July 15th of that league year. If no extension is in place at that point, the player can only agree to a one-year contract for the upcoming season (though not necessarily the tag price).
Players who are offered a tag must sign it prior to Week 10 in order to be eligible for the season. Players who are operating with an unsigned tag offer do not qualify for any holdout penalties as they are technically not under contract (they are forgoing a salary, not forfeiting it).
