Week 3: NBA Value Power Rankings

Our initial Value Power Rankings for the 2013 season show some surprises for a few teams.

The Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, LA Clippers, and Memphis Grizzlies find themselves at the bottom of the rankings. This proves that those teams are overpaying for the statistical on-court production through the first three weeks of the season. Conversely, the Philadelphia Sixers, Phoenix Suns, LA Lakers (without Kobe Bryant), and Orlando Magic find themselves at the top of the rankings - teams which were forecasted to either have a struggling year or were on the verge of "tanking" for the 2014 NBA Draft. These teams are actually underpaying for the production the players are outputing on the court.

Criteria

We decided to use all players roster based on a qualifying parameter instead of using just the starting players. The criteria for qualified players is based on a player playing 6.09 minutes per game.

The average team True Value was 14.82. This means that any team Total TVS that at 14.82 is playing at their financial value. Teams that have a higher TVS than 14.82 are playing above their financial value, while below 14.82 are overpaying for the production that is currently being produced.

What determines a team's True Value?
Spotrac's True Value Statistic is determined by comparing an indiviudal player's current statistical production to the average player's production for his particular position. The same comparison is made in terms of financial figures (2013 cap value). To find a team's overall True Value Statistic, we take the TVS from each indvidiual starting player, point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center, to find a total value number for that particular team.

Layman's Terms
Simply put, we're looking at how a team is producing based on the financial spending of their current roster. Because of this, our list varies when looking at the Win/Loss record. A team like the Orlando Magic may seem unworthy at #6 with a 4-6 record, but in terms of the stat product/dollars allocated, they're outperforming the majority of their oppoents. On the contrary a team like the San Antonio Spurs, currently 9-1 in the standings, appears to be overpaying/underproducing at the shooting guard and power forward positions.
