How the 16 NBA Playoff Rosters are Built Financially
Untitled Document

With the 2016-17 NBA Playoffs set to tip off this weekend, we'll take a look at how the 16 postseason teams are spending their salary cap dollars - positionally speaking. The following table represents each team's active 15-man roster, and shows how many players and the total combined 2016-17 cap dollars allocated to each major position group (Guards, Forwards, Centers). We've also collected combined cap totals for the projected starting 5, and the total salary cap allocations for the year to date (including all reserve players, retained salaries, etc...)

Notable Notes

  • The Cavaliers lead all postseason teams in cap allocation to Forwards, their Starting Lineup, & Total Cap.
  • The Cavs Starting Lineup accounts for $97.8M cap dollars. 8 of the 16 postseason teams have Total Salary Caps less than that.
  • The Bulls are carrying 9 guards for a combined $68.2M, most of the 16 squads.
  • The Celtics' 3 centers combine for $37.6M, $26.5M of which comes from Al Horford.
  • The Bucks' starting 5 accounts for just $32.6M in 2016-17 salary cap, least of the postseason rosters.
  • Of the 240 active roster postseason players, 19 carry a cap figure north of $20M, 37 of at least $15M, 63 of at least $10M.
