With the first week of free agency now in the books, we'll take a moment to step back and assess where teams currently stand in terms of cap spending by position. The following tables show the complete breakdown of cap dollars for each team by position. For puposes of "team building", we're looking at all active players on a team's roster - not just those that qualify for their Top 51 salary cap. Additionally we provide the average cap dollars each position is garnering across the NFL. Keep in mind that the figures below represent the total cap dollars among all players for that position (i.e. all active quarterbacks, all active wide receivers, etc...).

Left Tackle 4.36%
Right Tackle 2.55%
Guard 5.61%
Center 2.73%
Defensive Tackle 5.92%
Defensive End 9.45%
Inside Linebacker 4.87%
Outside Linebacker 6.76%
Cornerback 8.09%
Safety 5.86%

Offensive Spending
  • Three teams (Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Oakland) are spending less than $2M cap dollars on quarterbacks right now.
  • Only six teams are allocating more than $10 million to their running back arsenals thus far in 2014. Adrian Peterson counts for $14.4M on his own.
  • The Miami Dolphins have $28.7M cap dollars allocated to their wide receiving core - $17.25M of which counts for Mike Wallace.
  • Teams are allocating nearly 42% more dollars to left tackles than they are right tackles.
  • Four teams (Carolina, Dallas, Jacksonville, St. Louis) have more dollars allocated to tight ends than they do wide receivers.
  • 23 teams have at least $10M cap dollars allocated to wide receivers, most of any offensive position.
